OMG I just watched "Smitten" on PBS ---MUST WATCH!
"Smitten" is about a contemporary art collector in his eighties who has a 2,000 piece collection!
He says he likes to buy art from artists who have never sold anything before! You guys have to check this out when it rebroadcasts, the collection is amazing. The collector's name is Rene di Rosa, he lives in Napa Valley.

The Body as the Canvas

Shoes that make everyone the same height
Another kind of doing work that relates to the body: check out the link below the picture
I might need help in this area
Why do my posts (and as I noticed "only mine") show the option to be edited and to be deleted?
What am I doing not quite right or leaving incomplete when I post information?

From Meghan Clulow: Beauty as a thing
In this essay I will answer three questions about the chapter “The quotation of beauty”. Steiner believes that we need to stop looking at beauty as a thing or quality but as a form of communication. According to Steiner beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One art piece is not more beautiful then another because
From Lawrence Portie: Confused about Art
I am totally confused about Art. Mainly because I really know nothing about the history of art, and by reading text written by only one person I see it from her point of view . I see, and understand that art is actually is in the eye of the beholder. In some of these pictures I’ve seen, I see disfigured are misplaced body parts or objects that are place to represent body parts.

From Gwendolyn Moore: Beauty in MidCentry Art
1. 20 Century Art was hostile toward the ideal of Beauty they said it was a monstrous sublime the impulse of modern art is the desire to destroy Beauty the replacement of the beautiful by the sublime.
2. Under the pressure of Kant"s disinterested interest his hostility to the bourgeoisie and the misogyny built into the aesthetics, porograph was constructed as the iverse of high art.
From Sharron Kramer: Beautiful Communication
The human body is the most universal of symbols, we can all relate to it, and we attach meaning as we see fit, according to cultural context. The female nude body, in particular, has been an accepted subject of art throught history, with the exception of certain religious cultures barring its painting. Jean Dubuffet states, “ …the female body, of all the objects in the world, is the one that has long been associated (for Occidentals) with a very specious notion of beauty…” Yet
From Cindy Munsterman: The Portrayal of Beauty
#1During the 20th century when the beauty of a woman was reintroduced to art it angered many and made them hostile towards to the art. One reason for this was the feminist movement. Part of the civil rights movement was women’s right and the growth of feminists. “Feminists considered beauty a tool to keep women subservient
Maria Gomez-Calvo: From Wendy Steiner’s Venus In Exile
“… I think, we must stop treating beauty as a thing or quality, and instead as a kind of communication. We often speak as if beauty were a property of objects…
Steiner states that “We must stop treating beauty as a thing or quality”; but aren’t we treating all things that surround us the same way? Aren’t we are putting a tag on everything our eyes see (and even on the things we don’t see) to make sure they are either “good or bad”?

playing
Check out this video from TED. Thought it's a good timing with preparation to the sketch. Also - interesting how much of play is understood through body signals.

Project #1
It seems that I am one of, if not the only one that has not (much) contributed to the blog so far. A little bit of history... Even though I have been working on/with computers before most of you, were even born somehow when I try to use the blog it feels like I am talking to a machine not to people.
My apologies if they are required... maybe to the computers, I suppose.
My view of things seems to be broader, I look and see much more that what is really in front of me. I tent to misunderstand "words" or maybe as they enter my mind they get transformed, I call it "fantasy+reality" before they get to its destination (somewhere in the brain of course).

Why is it so hard for me to pick "one object that inspires me?
Very simple, they all could inspire me in one way or another, some for a split second, some longer.

I am at the point where I have to single out something or another from my very global view.
Any suggestions?
1st Project
It's hard to gather all my ideas and decide on one.
This is where I am at...
What makes me feel confused and then clear? (I ask this question because this is the feeling I received from the photograph that inspired me)
From distortion into clarity....
An object that makes me feel this is looking at or through a bubbles or a soapy solution. The distortion of the background because of the bubble solution confuses the eye at first but once you realize what you are looking at the clarity of objects begin to appear.

Cindy Sherman
So episode 5 in art 21 is not online yet. check out a preview, a video about a show, words, and pictures.
Kim and Cindy - this can be relevant to your project (the use of makeup there is very interesting). Meghan - the idea of a world of clown in the preview rings a bell? :) You can take it out of the library next to our building.

Joel-Peter Witkin
Since Joel-Peter Witkin says he uses unclaimed bodies from a Mexican morgue, I will not coment on the aesthetics of his work due to issues of consent of his subjects. It is interesting to note if he tried to do this in America, he would be jailed, the morgue would pay millions in restitution, and the pictures would be ordered destroyed.

Joel Peter Witkn
From what I have read, he did use real cadavers as his subjects (both animal and human) it doesn't go into detail of where he got the latest subjects but does say in Mexico is where he started. He is still alive and doing showings too.
here are two links the first of his autobiography the other his work, both sites are "legal" sites.

Still totally confused...
For some reason I still can get the real meaning of it all... even though I've to understand Jean's Baudrillard thoughts and theorys.
Association Project?
Hi all, I put some associations with each picture to start off discussion. How about adding your pictures/associations?
